Specimen Required:

 

 

Collect 3.0 mL (minimum 1.0 mL) of whole blood in a plain, royal blue-top Monoject® trace element blood collection tube.

 

 

NOTE:

If either gadolinium or iodide-containing contrast media has been administered a specimen can not be collected for 96 hours.

 

Laboratory Notes:

 

 

Allow the specimen (collected in a plain, royal blue-top Monoject® trace element blood collection tube.— product #8881-307006 (Supply T184)) to clot for 30 minutes; then spin down, remove stopper and carefully pour 1.0 mL (minimum 0.3 mL) of serum into a Mayo Metal-Free, screw-capped, polypropylene vial; avoiding transfer of the cellular components of blood.  Do not insert a pipet into the serum to transfer, and do not ream the specimen with a wooden stick to assist with serum transfer.  Send specimen refrigerated.  It is important that the specimen be obtained, processed, and transported according to instructions on special instruction section, “Metals Analysis — Collection and Transport.”

 

 

NOTE:

All specimens to be stored more than 48 hours should be sent frozen.
