Specimen Required:

 

SPECIMEN MUST ARRIVE WITHIN 24 HOURS OF DRAW.

 

 

 

 

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s).  If platelet count is >50,000 K/cumm send 10 mL of EDTA whole blood.  If platelet count is 20-50 K/cumm send 20 mL of EDTA whole blood.  If platelet count is <20 K/cumm send 30 mL of EDTA whole blood.

An interpretive report will be provided.  The direct test detects IgG on the patient’s platelets. Positive results may occur in collagen-vascular and hematologic lymphoma and lymphocytic leukemia. It may also occur with drug-induced thrombocytopenia, acute idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, and in post-transfusion purpura. Occasionally, positive results may be seen in healthy individuals.
