NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE/CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS AMPLIFIED DNA PROBE

NOTE: Chlamydia trachomatis probe is automatically performed on all specimens sent for Neisseria gonorrhoeae probe. Anal, eye, and throat specimens cannot be tested by probe.

Specimen Required:

 

SPECIMEN MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE LABORATORY WITHIN 4 DAYS OF COLLECTION.

 

 

 

Collect specimen using the BD ProbeTec™ ET Specimen Collection Kit for Chlamydia trachomatis/Neisseria gonorrhoeae supplied by St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

 

 

 

 

Cervix or Endocervical

 

 

1.

Remove excess mucus from the exocervix using the large, provided swab and discard.

 

 

2.

Insert the collection swab into the cervical canal and rotate the swab for 15-30 seconds to ensure adequate sampling.

 

 

3.

Withdraw the swab carefully, avoiding contact with the vaginal mucosa, insert the swab (1) into the transport tube.

 

 

4.

Insert swab into transport tube, snap off at score line, and cap tube tightly.

 

 

5.

Label the transport tube with the patient’s name, patient’s identification number, and date and time of collection.

 

 

6.

Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

 

 

NOTE:

1.

SPECIMEN SOURCE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.

 

 

 

2.

Spermicidal agents, talcum powder, and feminine sprays interfere with the assay and should not be used before collection.

 

 

 

3.

Vaginal specimens are suboptimal.

 

 

 

4.

Blood may cause inhibition or false-negative assay results.

 

 

 

 

Male Urethra 

 

 

1.

Patient should not have urinated within one hour prior to specimen collection.

 

 

2.

Insert the provided swab 2-4 cm into the urethra. Rotate swab clockwise for 3-5 seconds to ensure contact with all urethral surfaces, then withdraw the swab.

 

 

3.

Insert the swab into the transport tube, snap off at score line, and cap the tube tightly.

 

 

4.

Label the transport tube with the patient’s name, patient’s identification number, and date and time of collection.

 

 

5.

Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

2.

Collection from the male urethral discharge is preferable.

 

 

 

 

Urine 

 

 

1.

Collect specimen in a plastic, preservative free cup from patients who have not urinated within 1 hour prior to collection.

 

 

2.

The patient should collect the first 15-60 mL of voided urine.  A minimum of 15 mL of urine is necessary for testing.

 

 

3.

Refrigerate specimen immediately at 2-8°C.

 

 

4.

Forward promptly to the Microbiology Lab.

2.

Blood may cause inhibition or false-negative assay results.

The presence of feminine deodorant sprays, or talcum powder may cause false-negative assay results.
