NOTE: 

The complete ova and parasites exam may be useful when there is persistent diarrhea, with a negative ova and parasite screen test for Giardia and Cryptosporidium, especially when the patient has recently traveled or resided outside the United States.  Call Laboratory Customer Service (314-454-4161) to request this test.

Specify cyclospora and microsporidia if it suspected.

Specimen Required:

 

SUBMIT ONLY 1 OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIMENS:

 

 

 

 

Formalin and PVA-Preserved Stool

 

 

Place enough stool in the PVA and formalin containers to bring the liquid level up to the “Fill-to-here” line. PVA and formalin preservative containers are supplied by St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Send specimen at ambient temperature only.

 

 

 

 

OR if “in-patient” submit:

 

 

Fresh Stool if received in the laboratory within 1 hour of collection

 

 

1.0 g of stool in a screw-capped, sterile container. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

 

 

Unacceptable specimens:

Specimens containing barium

Specimens submitted on swabs

Specimens submitted in diapers

Specimens submitted on Inpatients >3 days old

 

 

 

 

 

 

Frequency:

Only 1 specimen per day should be collected for up to 3 days
