BORDETELLA PERTUSSIS DNA DETECTION BY PCR

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is utilized pursuant to a license agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.


NOTE:

This test does NOT routinely detect Bordetella parapertussis, which may account for approximately 5% of pertussis cases.  Contact the Virology supervisor at (314)-454-6039 , or Virology Lab at (314)-454-2036 if testing for Bordetella parapertussis is required.

Submit two Nasophayngeal swabs as follows:

 

Place one swab in Universal Transport Media (UTM)- PCR test is performed on this swab.

Place one swab in Regan Lowe Media- media is available at no charge from the State lab by calling 573-751-3334. Specimen forwarded to MO State Lab if PCR testing is positive (epidemiological use only)

Alternative specimen: a nasopharyngeal (or nasal) aspirate/ wash can be collected and transported in a screw-capped, sterile container within 24 hours of collection.
