Giemsa Stain
NOTE:			Specimens received after 2 p.m. will be processed but not read until the following morning.
	Test Performed At:
		Barnes-Jewish Hospital Laboratory
	Specimen Required:
	SPECIMEN MUST ARRIVE WITHIN 1 HOUR OF DRAW. SEND IMMEDIATELY.
	Call Microbiology Lab (454-2038) before drawing specimen.
		Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send 3.0 mL of EDTA whole blood. Invert several times to mix blood. (CLOTTED BLOOD IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.) Maintain sterility.
	Laboratory Notes:
		Call BJS to let them know specimen is coming. Walk specimen to BJS microbiology receiving window as soon as the specimen is received in the SLCH microbiology lab. Do not centrifuge.
	Reference Values:
		No blood parasites seen
		Physician alert value (automatic callback):: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, or Plasmodium malariae parasites seen or Babesia species seen
		Every critical test result will be called automatically.
