HEAVY METALS SCREEN, URINE

Reporting Title: Heavy Metals Scrn, U

Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)

Includes arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.

NOTE:

Mayo Medical Laboratories offers both an essential elements screen and a heavy metals screen. In the case when a metals screen is ordered, we will assume this to be a heavy metals screen request. In case we have misinterpreted your request, the specimen will be retained for 2 weeks following testing during which time you may call and request other testing.

Reference Values:

ARSENIC

Normal:

<120 mcg/ specimen

Toxic concentration:

³5,000 mcg/specimen

LEAD

Normal:

<80 mcg/specimen

Indeterminate:

80-400 mcg/specimen

Abnormal:

>400 mcg/specimen

MERCURY

Normal:

<10 mcg/specimen

Toxic concentration:

>50 mcg/specimen

The concentration at which toxicity is expressed is widely variable between patients. 50 mcg/specimen is the lowest concentration at which toxicity is usually apparent.

CADMIUM

<3.0 mcg/specimen

These reference values are for a 24-hour collection. Specimens collected for other than a 24-hour time period are reported in unit of mcg/L, for which reference values are not established.
