CHROMIUM, SERUM

Reporting Title: Chromium, S

Dynamic Reaction Cell-Inductively Coupled-Mass Spectrometry (DRC-ICP-MS)

Test Performed At:

Mayo Medical Laboratories   #8638

Specimen Required:

Collect 3.0 mL (minimum 1.2 mL) of whole blood in a plain royal blue-top Monoject® trace element blood collection tube (no additive).

Laboratory Notes:

1.

Allow the specimen to clot for 30 minutes; then centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from the cellular fraction.

2.

Remove the stopper and carefully pour 1.0 mL (0.5 mL minimum) serum into a 7.0 mL Mayo metal free, screw-capped polypropylene vial (Supply T173), avoiding transfer of the cellular components of blood.  DO NOT insert a pipet into the serum to accomplish transfer, and DO NOT ream the specimen with a wooden stick to assist with serum transfer.

3.

Send specimen refrigerated.  All specimens to be stored more than 48 hours should be sent frozen.

4.

It is important that the specimen be obtained, processed, and transported according to instructions on “Metals Analysis — Collection and Transport.”

5.

DO NOT LEAVE SERUM ON CELLS MORE THAN 60 MINUTES.

NOTE:

Reject due to gross hemolysis (slight okay)

Reference Values:

<0.3 ngm/L

When collected by a phlebotomist experienced in ultra-clean collection technique and handled according to the instructions on “Metals Analysis — Collection and Transport”, we have observed the normal concentration of chromium in serum to be <0.3 ng/mL.  However, the majority of specimens submitted for analysis from normal, unexposed individuals contain 0.3-0.9 ng/mL of chromium. Commercial evacuated blood collection tubes yield serum containing 2.0-5.0 ng/mL chromium.
