CHROMIUM, SERUM |

Reporting Title: Chromium, S |

Dynamic Reaction
Cell-Inductively Coupled-Mass Spectrometry (DRC-ICP-MS) |

Test Performed At: |

Mayo Medical
Laboratories #8638 |
Specimen Required: |
Collect 3.0 mL (minimum
1.2 mL) of whole blood in a plain royal blue-top Monoject® trace element
blood collection tube (no additive). |
Laboratory Notes: |
1. |
Allow the specimen to clot
for 30 minutes; then centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from the
cellular fraction. |
2. |
Remove the stopper and
carefully pour 1.0 mL (0.5 mL minimum) serum into a 7.0 mL Mayo metal free,
screw-capped polypropylene vial (Supply T173), avoiding transfer of the
cellular components of blood. DO NOT insert a pipet into the serum
to accomplish transfer, and DO NOT
ream the specimen with a wooden stick to assist with serum transfer. |
3. |
Send specimen
refrigerated. All specimens to be
stored more than 48 hours should be sent frozen. |
4. |
It is important that
the specimen be obtained, processed, and transported according to
instructions on “Metals
Analysis — Collection and Transport.” |
5. |
DO NOT LEAVE SERUM ON CELLS MORE THAN 60 MINUTES. |
NOTE: |
Reject due to gross hemolysis (slight okay) |
Reference Values: |
<0.3 ngm/L |
When collected by a
phlebotomist experienced in ultra-clean collection technique and handled
according to the instructions on “Metals
Analysis — Collection and Transport”, we have observed the normal
concentration of chromium in serum to be <0.3 ng/mL. However, the majority of specimens
submitted for analysis from normal, unexposed individuals contain 0.3-0.9 ng/mL
of chromium. Commercial evacuated blood collection tubes yield serum
containing 2.0-5.0 ng/mL chromium. |
