CATECHOLAMINE FRACTIONATION, URINARY, FREE

Reporting Title: Catecholamine Fract, Free, U

High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Includes unconjugated epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Test Performed At:

Mayo Medical Laboratories 9276

Specimen Required:

Submit a 24-hour urine collection in a urine container supplied by St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Refrigerate specimen during collection, and send specimen refrigerated.   Call 314-454-4161 to obtain container.  Please note collection start and stop times on container.

NOTE:

1.

This assay is of most value when the specimen is collected during a hypertensive episode.

2.

Discontinue any epinephrine, norepinephrine, or dopamine injections/infusions at least 12 hours before specimen collection, unless drug monitoring is the goal.

3.

Discontinue drugs that release or hinder metabolism of epinephrine, norepinephrine, or dopamine for at least 1 week before obtaining the specimen (see ‘Cautions’ for details).  If this is not possible for medical reasons, contact the laboratory to discuss whether a shorter drug-withdrawal period may be acceptable.

4.

Do not perform the test on patients withdrawing from legal or illegal drugs known to cause rebound plasma catecholamine release during withdrawal (see ‘Cautions’ for details).

Laboratory Notes:

Add 25 mL (5.0 mL minimum) of 50% acetic acid as preservative at start of collection. Use 15 mL of 50% acetic acid for children <5 years old. This preservative is intended to achieve a pH of between approximately 2.0 and 4.0. See special instruction section, “Urine Preservatives” for multiple collections.  10 mL from a 24-hour urine collection. Send specimen refrigerated in a plastic, 13-mL urine bottle.

NOTE:

1.

24-HOUR VOLUME IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.  WILL ACCEPT RANDOM/SPOT COLLECTION.

   2.

If sample is any specimen other than 24 Hr collection, test should be ordered as a MISC REF SLC
