Antibodies to cardiolipin are found in a number of diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other connective tissue diseases as well as in patients with nonautoimmune diseases. In SLE and related disorders, anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) are strongly associated with a number of clinical manifestations, including venous and arterial thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, and recurrent fetal loss. Approximately 30% of SLE patients will have ACA. Patients with non-SLE disorders account for about 50% of positive ACA results. ACA in normal populations range from 0.0-7.5%
