CADMIUM, URINE

Reporting Title: Cadmium, U

Methodology: Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)

Test Performed At:

Mayo Medical Laboratories   #8678

Specimen Required:

Submit an entire 24-hour urine collection in a urine container (with no metal cap(s) or glued inserts) supplied by St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Refrigerate specimen during collection, and send specimen refrigerated.   Call 314-454-4161 to obtain container.  Please note collection start & stop times and dates on container.

CAUTION:

Collection of urine specimens through a catheter frequently results in elevated values, because rubber contains trace amounts of cadmium that are extracted as urine passes through the catheter.

NOTES:

1.

High concentrations of gadolinium and iodide are known to interfere with most metals tests. If either gadolinium- or iodide- containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen cannot be collected for 48 hours.

2.

Random urines will also be accepted for testing in which a minimum of 2.0 mL of urine should be sent. Make sure order is for Cadium, Random Urine.

Laboratory Notes:

1.

Send 10 mL (minimum: 2.0 mL) from a 24-hour urine collection, collect in clean, plastic urine container(s) with no metal cap(s) or glued insert(s). No preservative. See special instructions “Urine Preservatives” for multiple collections.

2.

Send specimen in a plastic, 13-mL urine tube or in a clean, plastic aliquot container with no metal cap or glued insert. See special instructions “Metals Analysis — Collection and Transport” for complete instructions.

3.

Refrigerate specimen within 4 hours of completion of 24-hour collection. Send specimen refrigerated.

NOTE:

24-HOUR VOLUME IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.

Urine Preservative Collection Options

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The addition of preservative or application of temperature controls must occur within 4 hours of completion of the collection, OR an acceptable preservative must be added at the START of the collection. Urine tests which require that the preservative be added at the START of the collection are noted by an * (asterisk).
