Tandem Mass Spectrometry
	Test Performed At:
		St. Louis Children’s Hospital
	Specimen Required:
		SUBMIT ONLY 1 OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIMENS:
		Clean-Catch (Midstream) Collection
		Males
		Instruct the patient to collect the specimen as follows:
		1.	Withdraw the foreskin if uncircumcised.
		2.	Clean the glans beginning at the urethra and working away with sterile, soapy cotton balls or equivalent.
		3.	Rinse cleansed area beginning at the urethra and working away from it with 2 successive, sterile, water soaked cotton balls.
		4.	Begin urinating and pass the first portion into the toilet, the midportion into the appropriate container, and the rest again into the toilet.
		Females
		Instruct the patient to collect the specimen as follows:
		1.	Sit on the toilet and then separate the labia minor manually.
		2.	Cleanse urethral meatus and the surrounding areas with sterile, soapy cotton balls.
		3.	Rinse cleansed area with 2 successive sterile, water-soaked cotton balls wiping from front to back.
		4.	Begin urinating and pass the first portion into the toilet, the midportion into the appropriate container, and the rest again into the toilet.
		24-Hour Collection
		20 mL (pediatric: 2.0 mL) from a 24-hour urine collection in a urine container supplied by St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Refrigerate specimen during collection, and send specimen refrigerated.
		NOTE:		1.	24-HOUR VOLUME IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.
				2.	Follow instructions in policies section on “Urine Collection.”
	Laboratory Notes:
		Give to Chemistry to run creatinine prior to freezing. Write creatinine value on container.
