ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE (ACTH), PLASMA

Reporting Title: Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, P

Methodology: Automated Chemiluminescent Immunometric Assay

Test Performed At:

Mayo Medical Laboratories  #8411

Specimen Required:

Collect 3.0 mL (minimum 1.0 mL) of whole blood in a chilled lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s) and send to lab immediately. Morning (6 am – 10am) specimens are desirable.

Laboratory Notes:

Spin down in a refrigerated centrifuge, immediately separate plasma from cells, and send 1.0 mL (minimum 0.5 mL) of EDTA plasma frozen in plastic vial.

NOTE:

1.

Reject due to moderate - gross hemolysis

2.

Do Not freeze/thaw

Reference Values:

10-60 pg/mL (a.m. draws)

No established reference values for p.m. draws

Caution: Patients taking glucocorticoids may have suppressed levels of ACTH with an apparent high level of cortisol. This may be due to cross-reactivity with the cortisol immunoassays. If exogenous Cushing’s is suspected, a cortisol level determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) should be used with the ACTH level for the interpretation.
