Library Noise Policy
The JHC Library does not have a ‘no noise’ policy for the following reason:
The Library is a center for learning, and many students learn best through group collaboration. The Library is also a center for teaching, meaning that staff will be instructing individuals and groups in the use of certain resources and materials. Consequently, a certain amount of noise is to be expected given those activities.
E-Catalog (ECAT) is the JHC library's online card catalog, which
provides author, title, and subject access to books, media, and
serial titles. ECAT includes holdings from the JHC library, as well
as from other BJH Medical Center libraries, including the Washington
University Medical School Library. Patrons can perform a "quick"
PubMed search, check the holdings of other ECAT and Bi-State area libraries,
and update their patron record as well as renew items they have checked out online through ECAT, which
is available on the Web at: http://medcat.wustl.edu/ecat4
The libraries listed below subscribe to at least one of these systems
and have made their holdings available through ECAT:
What is INFO-PASS?
Provides on-site access to all participating libraries and, in
most cases, allows for the borrowing of materials. Currently,
more than 100 St. Louis area libraries, including most academic
libraries, participate in the INFO-PASS program.
INFO-PASS forms are issued to patrons by the parent library (i.e.,
JHC Library) to be used at a designated (or, host) library
within the St. Louis Regional Library Network on a one-time
basis per INFO-PASS. For any additional use or renewal, another
INFO-PASS must be issued.
An INFO-PASS will only be issued to patrons in good standing
who have a special need for materials that a Washington University
Medical Center library cannot provide. By signing the INFO-PASS
form, the patron agrees to honor the rules and restrictions
of the host library, and to pay for damaged or lost materials.
Please see library staff for more information and for INFO-PASS
forms.
The OCLC FirstSearch service is available on all Web-connected
College computers. FirstSearch is a collection
of databases including PsycFIRST, ArticleFirst,
ECO (a select group of fulltext journals), and
WorldCat, accessible through a Web-based common,
user friendly interface.Click
here if on campus. Please see Library staff for off-campus access.
Published by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE indexes
all aspects of the medical and related health sciences
from 1966 to the present. It's particularly useful
for finding information
about the drug therapy of diseases and disorders.
The International Nursing Index (INI) is included
in the MEDLINE database. As many as 89% of the citations
contain abstracts. There are a couple of freely
available interfaces to
MEDLINE on the Web:

Search for citations in such health sciences
literature databases as CINAHL, Clinical Evidence,
Health and Psychosocial Instruments, and various
configurations of MEDLINE. Ovid Online also
provides access to fulltext in the Books@Ovid and
Your Journals@Ovid databases. Click here if on campus. Please see Library staff for off-campus
access. |

For an excellent online OVID MEDLINE tutorial,
see the Calder
OVID Manual. Links to other online Ovid manuals can be found on the Library Guides page.
The Cochrane Library

Interlibrary Loan
What is the Scope of JHC Library's Interlibrary Loan
Service?
The purpose of interlibrary loan is to provide JHC Library patrons with access to materials necessary for study, teaching, and research that are not available at Washington University Medical Center libraries.
The conditions of this service are set by the regulations jointly governing the JHC and lending libraries.
Who May Use Interlibrary Loan?
JHC students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This service is also available to Barnes-Jewish Hospital professional staff, and additionally, to individuals and companies who have contracted to use JHC Library services.
How is an Interlibrary Loan submitted?
Patrons must use the interactive interlibrary loan forms available
on the JHC Library's web site. Handwritten or typed
lists of citations will not be accepted. Links
to the forms are available below, on the library's home
page,
and on the electronic forms page.
The forms must be filled out as completely and accurately
as possible, including contact information. Fields
marked with asterisks are required. Incomplete and/or
inaccurate information can significantly delay the
delivery of requested materials. Please submit one form per requested item.
What does Interlibrary Loan Cost?
We will make every attempt to acquire materials at no charge. However,
if we cannot locate a library that holds the item in question and
with which we have a reciprocal ILL agreement, then please use Becker
Library's ILLiad
interlibrary loan system. Members of the BJH Medical Center are
charged $8.00 per request, substantially less than the $11.00 national
average. Requests are $4.00 for those affiliated with Washington
University, for example, students enrolled at University College
or faculty having a joint appointment. Registration
is required for first-time ILLiad users.
How Long does Interlibrary Loan Take?
Interlibrary loans take differing lengths of time, depending on
which library holds the item. In any case, please allow 2 weeks
for requested items to arrive.
Which Materials are Available through Interlibrary
Loan?
Books and photocopies of journal articles, newspapers, and materials otherwise not available at the Washington University Medical Center libraries may be requested in strict accordance with copyright law.
The following types of materials cannot
be requested: reference materials, whole issues and bound volumes of journals, most audiovisual/media materials, computer software, and fragile or rare materials.
Patrons are expected to retrieve materials held by BJH/WUMC libraries.
What happens when Interlibrary Loans Arrive?
For faculty and staff, materials will be placed in mailboxes in
the Communications Center. Students will be notified by phone or
email that requested books have arrived. Photocopies will be filed
alphabetically in the library's photocopier room and books will
be kept behind the circulation desk for pickup.
What is the Loan Period and are there Renewal Restrictions?
The loan period is determined by the lending library. A renewal
request must be formally made by the patron at least four
days in advance of the due date. Lending libraries determine
conditions regarding the use of their materials. Limitations such
as no renewal and In-Library Use Only
must be honored.
What about Overdue Fines and Replacement Charges?
If the lending library assesses an overdue fine, this fee will
be passed on to the borrower. The borrower is responsible for the
replacement cost of, plus a per-item processing
fee for, materials that are lost or damaged. Please note
that the late return or damaging of books jeopardizes the ability
of our library to borrow materials in the future.
