General Information

The JHC Honor Society of Nursing was started in 1999, to:

  1. recognize superior achievement;
  2. recognize the development of leadership qualities;
  3. foster high professional standards;
  4. encourage creative work; and
  5. strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession

The Honor Society recognizes excellence through publication of its members activities in newsletters, presenting annual awards for leadership, clinical excellence and mentoring, and awarding prizes for scholarly activities. The Honor Society hosts several events throughout the year, including a research day, an annual business meeting and educational program, and an annual induction ceremony of new members (held in May each year).

Membership

Membership in the Honor Society is by invitation and eligibility is based on the candidates academic and professional achievement. Candidates are invited to join in one of two ways: in their educational programs (BSN and/or MSN) or as a community leader.

Criteria for BSN nursing students to be invited include having a 3.0 minimum GPA, being in the upper 35% of their class and having completed at least one-half of the nursing curriculum. Graduate students (MSN) eligible for membership must have a 3.5 GPA and have completed one-quarter of the curriculum. Those joining as a student do not need to apply for membership; students meeting all the criteria are invited to join and will receive letters of instruction.

Community leaders are those with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree who have demonstrated marked achievement in nursing education, practice, research, administration or publication.

Those desiring membership as a community leader must apply and show evidence of achievement.

Membership in the Honor Society is life-long, however to be considered an active member, annual dues need to be paid.

Sigma Theta Tau

Three representatives from our Honor Society presented a petition to become a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau at the biennial convention that was held November 1-5 in Toronto and it was accepted. So, we are now a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). This is the international honor society of nursing that was started in 1922 and has chapters all over the world. This is a major step forward in our College history and we are very excited about the event. Our Honor Society achieved this status in the shortest time frame possible, largely due to the vision and hard work of the original steering committee and subsequent officers and committee members.

We will be assigned a Greek name from STTI headquarters, but this has yet to be determined. The name is assinged in the order in which petitioning chapters hold their chartering ceremony. Not all chapters have determined their date yet and therefore we do not at this time know our new name. As soon as we know, it will announced and posted to the Honor Society Web page.

Our chartering ceremony will take place Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Junior League in Clayton, MO. We will be having buffet dinner and guest speaker for the event along with our annual induction. While all members inducted at this induction as well as at future ones will be joining STTI, all current members of our Honor Society will be able to join Sigma Theta Tau. More information will be coming in newsletters as well as on this Web site in Spring 2004.

Fundraising

We have purchased leather checkbook covers with the College seal printed on the front and are selling them to raise funds for the Honor Society. The checkbooks, which cost $10, are dark blue with the seal in gold print. If you would like to purchase one (or more), please see any JHC nursing faculty. Checks should be made payable to JHC Honor Society of Nursing. Please consider helping support the Honor Society through a purchase. Funds will go directly to program planning, including the chartering ceremony, and to offsetting convention expenses.
