BS in Allied Health

Bachelor of Science in Allied Health with a concentration in Management

   The objective of the Bachelor of Science in Allied Health program is to prepare allied health professionals who hold an associate degree and/or professional healthcare certification for leadership and management roles in a variety of settings. Many allied health professionals who hold or seek to assume management roles in a variety of work settings will benefit from academic preparation at the baccalaureate level.

   The Bachelor of Science in Allied Health degree program builds on a framework of general education courses and the student's classroom and work experiences from their professional certification. Interwoven into the curriculum are general education and selected core courses and business management courses.

   The Bachelor of Science in Allied Health degree program is a 121 credit hour program consisting of 36 credit hours of general education courses, 19-21 credit hours taken at Jewish Hospital College, and 27 credit hours of business management focused courses completed at University College, Washington University. There is a maximum of 39 credit hours awarded for professional certification, as long as the student documents graduation from an accredited (i.e., regional and/or programmatic) associate degree or diploma program.

PROGRAM GOALS:

To prepare graduates:

  1. Apply knowledge and skills synthesized from general education and professional discipline to the provision and coordination of patient care.
  2. Use analytical and clinical decision making to evaluate health status of patients.
  3. Integrate legal, ethical and professional standards into practice.
  4. Use research strategies to evaluate and implement procedures/protocols.
  5. Demonstrate commitment to improvement of the health care delivery system.
  6. Recognize the economic implications of health care and be fiscally accountable.
  7. Participate in the improvement of health care quality, scholarship in clinical practice and lifelong learning.
  8. Provide professional patient care in a variety of settings to racially, culturally and ethically diverse individuals, families and communities.
  9. Accept responsibility for participating in the advancement of the allied health profession.

BSAH - MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATION COURSES

AH 4850 - Management Synthesis
2 credit hours (2 didactic/0 practicum)
Integrates previous knowledge and skills in the areas of leadership, management and organization as applied to health care practice. Emphasis is placed on relevant issues that impact the management and leadership role in health care. Designed to be the last course in the curriculum.

HS 1330 - Professional Communication
2 credit hours (2 didactic/0 practicum)
Prerequisite/Concurrent: English Composition I
Introduces communication theory relating to individuals and groups. Students develop a greater awareness of personal values as they relate to interactions with patients, their families and members of the health care team. Focuses on developing basic written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills, the caregiver-client relationship, and understanding of an individual's response to alterations in health.

HS 3131 - Health Care Values & Ethics
3 credit hours (3 didactic/0 practicum)
Provides basic knowledge and skills in recognizing ethical issues in health care. Professional moral development, moral reasoning and relevant ethical principles and theories are emphasized. Examines the formation of personal and institutional value systems as they influence the delivery of health care.

HS 3133 - Healthcare Needs of the Elderly
2 credit hours (2 didactic/0 practicum)
Prerequisite: U29-120
Study of the process of aging related to physiological, mental, emotional, spiritual, and sociocultural dimensions and total care needs. Principles of health care that assist the older adult attain an optimal level of health are presented.

HS 3333 - Statistics
3 credit hours (3 didactic/0 practicum)
Provides basic understanding of fundamental statistical methods used in experimental and associated research studies, with the primary purpose of gaining a conceptual understanding of how statistical methods can be chosen to answer specific research questions.

HS 3501 - Health Care Organization and Administration
3 credit hours (3 didactic/0 practicum)
Focuses on the development, organization and management of health care delivery systems, including reimbursement strategies and financial aspects of hospital management and operations. Basic theories of health care leadership, management and quality assurance are presented.

HS 3520 - Leadership and Management
3 credit hours (3 didactic/0 practicum)
Examines theories of leadership, management and organization as applied to health care systems. Health care economics, political issues and health care are investigated within a systems theory framework. Computer programs are used for development of financial spread sheets and delivery patterns.

HS 4510 - Research Methods
3 credit hours (3 didactic/0 practicum)
Develops an understanding of the research process as applied to professional health care practice. The value and purpose of research within an ethical/legal context are explored. Qualitative and quantitative research methods and approaches to solving health care problems are examined. Students are actively involved in evaluating, critically analyzing and interpreting data to determine implications for practice.

HS 4800 - Special Topics in Health Care
2-3 credit hours (2-3 didactic/0 practicum)
Seminar focusing on significant, timely, and relevant issues and subjects influencing professional practice and health care. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

HS 4920 - Transcultural Health Care
2 credit hours (2 didactic/0 practicum)
Exploration of theoretical and conceptual aspects of international and cross-cultural health care. Topics covered include culture and ethnicity; cross-cultural communications, beliefs and values; cultural variations in response to actual or potential problems of health or illness; review of research literature; and methods for caring and treating culturally influenced responses.
